Kirchberg/Upper Austria: Great excitement for YACO Racing’s home race last weekend (June 11–13) at the Red Bull Ring. The Austrian team was eager to deliver strong results at the German GT Championship in front of its home crowd and with fans at the circuit for the first time since last year.

Well prepared, the team headed to the 4,318-meter-long circuit in Styria for Thursday’s test and set-up runs. Deputy team principal Peter Reicher reported: “After our season opener in Oschersleben, we took our R8 to Audi’s Neckarsulm facility. We had experienced unusual behavior by the car and wanted to have every millimeter checked by the manufacturer. Once the car arrived back at our workshop in Plauen, we assembled the R8 and travelled to the Red Bull Ring with several sets of dampers in our luggage. We were clear that this would be a testing weekend under racing conditions.”

The weekend projection was more or less proven right. 22nd place in the first qualifying session on Saturday and a race retirement due to a puncture did not make the analysis easier. Sunday’s action went a little more to the liking of YACO principal Uwe Geipel and his team. Still somewhat set back by 25th place during qualifying, the team delivered a strong race performance. “We gave it our all. What a bummer that we were beaten by just three hundredths of a second in a three-way battle with the other two Audi teams Car Collection and WRT. That said, we crossed the finish line in 16th position, just barely missing out on some important championship points,” Simon Reicher illustrates the race thriller.

Peter Reicher describes what the team learned from this test race weekend in Spielberg: “We believe we took a big step in the right direction on Sunday. We may have found the shock absorber set-up that works best for our R8. Between now and the next race in Zandvoort in four weeks, we plan to complete more tests to validate this weekend’s experience.”

The third round of the German GT Championship run by the ADAC GT Masters will be held July 9–11 in Zandvoort, Netherlands. YACO Racing hopes to match, if not surpass its fantastic memories from Zandvoort.
